A Piece of History The City Council of Port Louis, formerly known as the Municipal Council of Port Louis, was set up in 1850 by ordinance No. 16 which was passed by the Council of Government on 27th December 1849, coming into force on 1st January 1850. The Municipal Chart, as the Ordinance is commonly called, was drafted by Prosper D'Epinay. Amended several times, mainly in 1903, 1921 and 1939, it was replaced by the Local Government Ordinance of 1989. Now, the Local Government Act 2011 is in force. Louis Lechelle was appointed the first Mayor as a result of the Municipal Elections held in February 1850. Currently, the City Council is composed of 25 members who are all duly elected by inhabitants within the City Council of Port Louis.
