Cemeteries and Cremation Grounds

The Public Health Department controls and maintains the following cemeteries and cremations grounds:

·         St Georges/ Gebert / Western / Muslim Cemeteries, Les Salines (Tel: 2111822)

·         Eastern Cemetery, Roche Bois (Tel: 2403080)

·         Cremation Grounds at Tranquebar, Les Salines and Vallée des Prêtres

·         Crematorium at Les Salines.

Burials as well as placing of dead bodies in vaults and cremations are effected by Burial Ground Attendants under the supervision of Health Inspectors after all formalities are completed.  The Health Inspectors posted at the Cemeteries also collect burial fees (re-opening of graves/vaults), fees for the purchase of new plots of ground, municipal vaults rental fees, cremation fees, etc.   They supervise the works of cemetery labourers responsible for the cleaning of the cemeteries (grass cutting, refuse collection, etc.).

 

Normal Opening Hours of Cemeteries

Ø  Monday to Saturday          -            6.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.

Ø  Sunday                               -           8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m

 

Late night burials up to 10.30 p.m. may be acceded to at Muslim Cemetery.  The officer in charge of the cemetery should be informed before 5.30 p.m. on the same day

Fees leviable for the purchase of land for graves or vaults, digging/re-opening of graves, construction of vault tombs and monuments,  cremation etc are as follows:

Purchase of  land for graves

The price of any plot of land not exceeding 1 metre 83 centimetres by 91 centimetres shall be

For any plot of land exceeding the above surface measurements, the price for additional requirement, which shall not exceed 15 centimetres in length, shall be

For construction of vault tombs and monuments the following rates shall be paid in addition to the price of the land:

For the construction of a subterranean vault, in addition

Should such vault extend above the level of surrounding soil, the additional fee mentioned for vaults or tombs above the ground shall be:

The above tariff shall be held to apply to the cemeteries wherever situated within the jurisdiction of the Council.

No fee shall be paid for digging of graves for burial of unclaimed dead bodies.

The following rates shall apply for the occupation of any vault erected by the Council in its cemeteries provided that a refundable deposit of Rs 3000 be paid as security.

Fees for cremation:

Cremation without coffin - Rupees 2000

No new graves are available for sale at St Georges, Western, Gebert and Eastern Cemeteries.

Documents to be produced for burial to the Officer in Charge of Cemetery:

1.      Proof of ownership of grave.

2.      Identity card of applicant.

3.      Burial Permit from Civil Status Office.

Documents to be produced to Inspector in Charge of Crematorium:

1.      Identity card of applicant.

2.      Cremation Permit from Sanitary Authority.

The management of cemeteries and cremation grounds are regulated by The Cemeteries Regulations 2011
